İki genç adam sahte bir parayı bir fotoğrafçı dükkânına yutturmayı  başarırılar. Fotoğrafçı da bu parayı dükkâna gelen bir servis şöförüne  verir. Bu olay, talihsiz servis şoförü Yvon’un hayatını mahvedecek  trajik olaylar zincirini başlatır. Yvon yakalanır ve mahkemeye verilir.  Mahkeme suçunu hafifletmesine rağmen, işini kaybeder ve hapse girer.  Ailesi tarafından reddedilen genç adam kendini dünyada kimsesiz ve  dışlanmış olarak bulur ve dini bir arınma arayışına girer. "Para"nın  hikayesi Tolstoy’un "Sahte Para" öyküsünden esinlenmiş olmasına rağmen,  tema olarak Dostoyevski’ye daha yakın durmaktadır. Film büyük Fransız  ustanın son filmidir ve minimal sade tarzının bütün özeliklerini  taşımaktadır.
